MISSION AND TASK OF THE MILITARY INTELLIGENCE OFFICE (MIO)

MISSION OF THE MILITARY INTELLIGENCE OFFICE OF THE REPUBLIC OF HUNGARY

            The MIOs mission is to carry out its tasks – set forth in the 1995 CXXV. Law – by making use of open and secret information collection methods in order to help prevail the national security interests of the Republic of Hungary, thereby contributing to the preservation of the country’s sovereignty and the protection of its constitutional order.

            TASKS OF THE MILITARY INTELLIGENCE OFFICE

            The tasks of the MIO is to:

a.) collect, analyze and report such military-political, military-industrial and military information (obtained abroad or related to foreign countries) that is connected with the military element of the security policy and is necessary for the government’s decisions;
b.) reveal the efforts indicative of offensive intention against the Republic of Hungary;
c.) explore the hostile intentions and activities of foreign military intelligence services, which pose a threat to the sovereignty and security of the Republic of Hungary;
d.) collect information on illegal arms trade endangering national security, as well as on terrorist organizations posing a threat to the Hungarian armed forces;
e.) participate in preventing and revealing the illegal transit of internationally controlled products and technologies;
f.) provide information for the General Staff’s operational and strategic planning;
g.) ensure security protections for the Hungarian military organizations and buildings (institutions) located abroad that are important from the aspect of the government’s activities;
h.) perform the task of protecting and controlling the persons within its jurisdiction from the standpoint of national security.

PLACE OF THE MILITARY INTELLIGENCE OFFICE WITHIN THE SYSTEM OF THE NATIONAL SECURITY SERVICES OF THE REPUBLIC OF HUNGARY

            The MIO is one of the military services among the national security services of the Republic of Hungary. The MIO – together with the other national security services – is an organization controlled by the Government. It has a nationwide authority and an independent economic management financed by the state budget.
